Measurement comparison links

Compare measurements includes an object label, the names you enter and one or two lengths in the part of the link after #. Your browser reads that information locally; it is not sent to our hosting server or stored in the shared-room service. The comparison page does not request your location, use analytics or save your entries in browser storage.

Anyone with the comparison link can read, copy, change or forward its contents. Names and lengths are not verified, and the link is not encrypted. It may remain in your browser history and in the messaging app you use to share it. Sharing sends the link to the app you select under that app's policies.

A reply creates a new link with both measurements. Earlier links do not update. Comparison links have no automatic expiry, and we cannot revoke or delete copies already shared. These links do not use the ten-day room expiry or removal controls described below. Link previews and search metadata remain generic; shared comparison pages ask search engines not to index them. The public introduction can appear in search.

What happens when you join

On the friends page, we can suggest an approximate area using the IP address of your request, through our hosting provider, Amazon Web Services (AWS). This estimate can be unavailable or wrong, particularly with mobile networks or VPNs. You can choose a listed city instead.

Use my device location asks your browser for permission to capture a location once. The result includes coordinates, an accuracy estimate and a capture time. It is not guaranteed to be exact. Granting browser permission prepares the snapshot; choosing Add me, creating a room, or saving a location update sends it to our service.

We store your chosen name, location coordinates, source, available accuracy and capture time to calculate distances, including when another person joins later. Opening a room does not automatically capture or publish a new device location.

Who can see it

Anyone with the room link can see its members and distances, and can join while there is space. Forwarding the link forwards access. Names are entered by participants and are not verified identities.

The service calculates distances and sends member names, location labels, capture information and rounded distances to the group. It does not send another participant's raw coordinates to your browser. Precise distances, especially from several known points, can still reveal someone's location. Only contribute a location you are comfortable using in this shared measurement.

Link previews contain a general invitation rather than names, locations or distances. A person who opens the link can see the room. The service and AWS process the stored snapshots; this is not end-to-end encrypted location sharing.

Your controls

You can update your entry or remove yourself from the room. The creator can remove an entry or close the whole room. These controls use private keys saved in that browser, separate from the shared link. Another device, private browsing or clearing browser storage may mean losing those controls. You can ask the room creator to remove an entry if you lose access.

Removing an entry removes its location from the active room record. Updating replaces the previous snapshot; the room does not keep a location history. Closing a room removes participant information and makes the room unavailable. People may retain information they already saw or copied.

When a room expires

A room expires after 10 days without a visit. Opening, joining, or explicitly updating your snapshot in an active room extends its deadline. Background refreshes and ordinary chat link previews do not extend it. The room shows its current expiry date. A room that keeps receiving visits can remain available longer than ten days.

Expired rooms stop returning participant information immediately. Automatic database cleanup removes expired records later, usually within a few days. Small records used to prevent immediate recreation of a closed room contain no participant names or locations.

Browser storage and hosting

Shared-room keys and your editing keys are stored locally when browser storage is available. The screen ruler separately saves its calibration and unit preference in your browser. Screen-ruler measurements are not sent to the shared-room service.

This website uses AWS for delivery and shared-room storage. Requests include network information such as an IP address, which is also used to limit excessive requests. The application does not log location payloads or editing keys. Hosting and security services may retain request metadata under their configured retention policies.

There are no advertising or analytics scripts, third-party fonts, or account sign-ups. Sharing through your browser opens the sharing app you select; that app handles the message under its own policies.
